       General Information

I am a clinical psychologist licensed in Pennsylvania.  Along with maintaining a small clinical practice, I serve as Assistant Director of the Penn State Psychological Clinic and am a faculty member in  the Penn State Department of Psychology.  Part of my duties consist of conducting research and training doctoral students in psychotherapy and diagnostic assessment.

                    My Approach

I have been trained in various approaches to therapy (e.g., cognitive-behavioral, experiential), but primarily work from a psychoanalytic (AKA psychodynamic) perspective.  Thus, I tend to focus on helping people more deeply understand and uncover the emotional meanings of their problems in order to help them feel better.  For some people, it is also helpful to understand and eventually   break free from repetitive patterns of behavior that may be causing them difficulties or sabotaging their possibilities for a rich and full life.  I often incorporate my philosophical training into my work.  Some of the greatest minds in history have struggled with fundamental questions of meaning, happiness, suffering, and purpose for a much longer time than clinical psychology has been in existence, and I've found their ideas to be very helpful.  In general, though, I tailor my therapeutic approach to the particular needs of the individual.
